Hayley Williams San Jose Concert reviews
Worth the wait, but not great.
Somehow, during all that time, our paths never crossed for more than 25 years, Hayley Williams was on my 'gotta see' list. The stars finally aligned for this show in the very intimate Smothers Theater at Pepperdine University, in the mountains overlooking Malibu. Her voice was touch-and-go, and she showcased her son David too much, but the show was pleasant. Hayley's classics were top-heavy on her setlist, something Roberta Flack couldn't be bothered with during her poor show last year. Of course, some songs were missing, like "Deja Vu", "Promises, Promises" and "Then Came You", her great 1974 duet with the Spinners. The ones that did make the setlist were a pleasure, and included "Alfie", "I'll Never Love This Way Again", "Do You Know the Way To San Jose", and of course "Walk On By", which she opened with. Considering that she had a TON of hits, it's to be expected. She ran through a medley of some of her 60's hits when I would have preferred the full versions, and the Brazilian section in the middle of the show went on too long, but I still enjoyed seeing her regardless.
